When the Subconscious Wants Insomnia

Did you know that the subconscious may not want to turn off these internal alarm bells? It’s as surprising as it is common.

But just because someone has insomnia does not necessarily mean that, deep down, they want to get rid of it. Many people with insomnia notice that family, friends, or coworkers start to feel bad for them when they don’t get a good night’s sleep. When one has trouble sleeping, people act amazed that they seem to function so well. So for some people insomnia becomes a badge of honor—and a crutch. While no one ever consciously says to themselves, “I want people to be nicer to me so I’m going to have insomnia,” the sympathy feels good. This attention only adds to the subconscious mind’s reasoning for why insomnia is “helping.”

Not being able to sleep is the reason she’s always in a bad mood . . . the reason she’s overweight . . . the reason she’s always running late . . . the reason her performance is down . . . the reason her work is less successful . . . the reason her house is a mess . . . and on and on. While these motivations make no conscious sense, excuses for bad behavior and sympathy could keep insomnia going forever unless the downsides to these are addressed in the subconscious. As you’ll continue to discover, when it comes to insomnia, the root cause is not so cut and dry; there is usually a deeper emotional issue to resolve. As you practice self-hypnosis this week and notice the different alarm bells in your subconscious, remember there is often an initial sensitizing event—otherwise known as “a trigger”—but there can also be plenty of instances of “reinjuring” that happen after the initial sensitizing event, perhaps years after, which exacerbate the unhelpful subconscious beliefs around sleep. For example, a trigger at the age of five can be reinjured at the age of sixteen, thereby reinforcing beliefs that began in childhood and making them even stronger (and more difficult to overcome . . . unless you’re using hypnosis).

So, as you take time to listen to this week’s recording, allow yourself to be taken to a deeper place to assess your alarms. Just know that whether you return to the initial sensitizing event or an instance of reinjuring, you are making tremendous progress. By seeing the subconscious alarm for what it is, you are going to uncover the key to turning it off. Then you can take a nice, deep letting-go breath and enjoy the sleep you deserve.
